Central America. The land of coffee. And bananas. And resplendent quetzals. Home to the Mayan and Aztec civilisations. Also the origin of the phrase Banana Republic. And witness to continued social unrest and revolution going back nearly 200 years.

Shining brightly amidst all this is Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America. Nicaragua may be the second poorest country in the West but they have lofty goals. Known as the land of lakes and volcanoes and home to Americas’ second-largest rainforest, among other things, the country has set a goal of 90% renewable energy by the year 2020.

Also among their goals was to make healthcare affordable and accessible for the entire region by building medicine manufacturing capability locally. This is where we stepped in.

One of our favourite projects, this was a joint venture between the governments of Russia and Nicaragua to set up a showcase manufacturing facility for the production of vaccines and other immunological preparations. Led by Mechnikov Biotech, this was Nicaragua’s first vaccine manufacturing project and was envisioned as a future-ready showcase for all of Latin America.

We were involved at all stages of the project, beginning with a futuristic design that helped the project stand out and apart from all competition. We supported the project from concept to commercialization and also submitted the feasibility report to secure project funding. We worked with Cuba FDA to ensure Vaccine Lot Release. We also ensured timely completion of all technology tie-ups for the project and provided the Master Project Plan and basis of design. We also evaluated and selected the engineering firm to complete the project and obtained the additional mandate for QMS implementation.

Initiated in 2014, this project was completed with the establishment of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility which is a first in the region. This was an absolutely unique undertaking with multiple cross continent stakeholders and has now become a model project for other countries to look up to.
